In conclusion, it is clear
food poverty still exists in Britain. When looking at The Watercress girl for
example it showed severe destitution in Victorian society and how poverty
affected the young girl’s diet. However, Soyer’s recipe book tried to ‘educate’
the poor but it seems that method was not so successful as most poor people at
the time were unable to read and also through Hortense’s voice it seems he didn’t
truly understand the struggles of poverty. Moving on to food poverty in Britain
today social media has made it more glamourous than ever to eat healthy but it
seems this is not inclusive to all classes of society. Jack Monroe and her blog
seemed like the way forward and it was something I had never seen before. Her recipes
are full of empathy and her method of using simple recipes with very cheap
ingredients seemed like the most effective way in starting to tackle the issue of
food poverty.
